The Oude Markt (Old Market or Square) is a centrally located large square just off the Grote Markt (Grand Market). During the academic year it is at the center of student nightlife with a wide choice of bars, cafes and restaurants.

The Oude Markt is a pedestrianised area and the buildings surrounding the square offer attractive architecture. Besides students, also lots of locals come to enjoy their meal or drink a beer here (weather permitting). The place is often called the longest bar counter in the world.

During three days in August, Market Rock is organized, a local music festival with free admission, mostly featuring national artists.
